What is a boiler island?

Boiler island is a complex of equipment for generating saturated or superheated steam. It consists mainly of a steam boiler, burners and heat exchange equipment.

Classification of boilers according to their purpose:

  • Energy-fired steam boilers - designed to produce steam used in steam turbines.
  • Industrial steam boilers - produce steam for technological needs, the so-called "industrial steam generators".
  • Utilization steam boilers - they use secondary energy resources to produce steam - the heat of the hot gases generated in the production cycle.

According to the relative motion of heat exchanging media (flue gases, water and steam), steam boilers can be divided into two groups:

  • Gas-tube boilers - flue gases move inside the pipes, and the heat carrier washes the pipes outside.
  • Water tube boilers - water and steam-water mixture move inside the pipes, and flue gases wash the pipes outside.

The principle of operation of the boiler plant.

At large thermal power plants and thermal power plants, water tube boilers are most often used. In the furnace of the boiler there are burners operating on gas, fuel oil or dusty coal. Hot gas heats the boiler pipes on the inside of the boiler (furnace screen). The water preheated in the economizer turns into steam in boilers. Next, the steam is fed to a superheater, where it overheats to very high temperatures. Hot gases also heat the air, which is supplied by the fans to the burner devices.
